The guitars and stomping bass on ‘Grounds’ complement vocalist Joe Talbot’s lyrics of the sound of strength in numbers. Every instrument packs a punch with the drumming on ‘War’ enough to get your heart jacked. The production on this album is some of IDLES best sounding material so far. Themes of class struggle, human rights, equality, unity, mental health and self esteem are all explored and exposed here with the additional themes of coming to terms with new found fame been thrown into the mix. Much like their previous outings Brutalism (2017) and Joy As An Act Of Resistance (2018), Ultra Mono is a ferocious continuation of the topics the band had explored before. Right from the opening note of opening track ‘War’, IDLES’ unbridled energy is on full display. But success is very much the best revenge and IDLES remain subconscious of that fact on their third album, Ultra Mono. Especially as of late with some of their peers in Fat White Family and Sleaford Mods accusing them of pandering to other social classes with shallow lyrical themes and vapid chants. Despite their growing success, Bristol punks IDLES are no stranger to controversy.
